The Shining
plot summary: Jack becomes a winter caretaker of the succluded OverLook Hotel, found in the Colorado mountains. The hotel has a violent history. To keep him company, he takes his son and his wife along. However, his son, Danny, sees disturbing images of the hotels past, because of something called ' The Shining' . These drive Jack insane, and increasingly more violent, and his wife and son are worried he will recreate some of the disturbing events that has previously happened in this hotel.
The scenery around them is the Mise en Scene. The constant view of the scenery shows how isolated they are, as there is seemingly only one road. also, it shows how hard it is to get there, as there are driving for all of the sequence on one long road, showing how distanced they are from any other civilisation. Also, the road is empty, apart from 2 cars travelling in the opposite direction. Having the road empty, with cars only travelling away from where they are going, shows that others want to get away from there, not go towards it. In one shot, there is a close up of the car. This is the only time the camera isnt in an extreme long establishing shot. You can see the car is an original VW beetle. this is significant becasue the film is set in 1980, the year it was made, but the VW beetle was released in 1945. this shows a strong connection with the past, almost a refusal to move on, which can mirror Danny's strong connection to spirits from the past .
The camera shots throughout the sequence are all establishing shots,from an extreme long distance. This is so you can always see the mountains, and you can always see that there is nothing around them, and that they are completely isolated. Lots of the shots of the car are done from a high angle, which makes the car look incredibly small compared to the surroundings, making them look vulnerable and insignificant. At the end there is a shot of the hotel against the montain. This shows that the hotel is small compared tp the mountain, However as it is infront of the mountain it is more important, and is the main focus point of the shot. This links with the name 'Overlook', which shows that its above lots in its own right, both physically at a higher altitude, and symbolically its looking down on people, and like with a high angle shot, if your looking down on subjects then they seem less important and weaker than the tall, more powerful subject. At the beginning, there is a canted angle used, as they are used to show confusion and disorientation.
The sound at the beginning is a simplistic, monophonic bass line riff. This is so it doesnt interfere with the main focus of the scene; the car. However it is quite loud, which is unusual for a bass line, as it draws your attention to it more than it would normally. The louder dynamic makes you more aware of its presence with the scene, and draws attention to its unsettling minor melodic intervals. This is signifcant for the Thriller, as it builds a feeling of suspense early in the movie, so (as with a establishing shot) sets the scene for the rest of the film. The slow tempo is solemn, so creates a sad mood, which shows that the rest of the film is likely to be unhappy. When the titles appear, the music changes from bass to a high synthesiser. There is no melody to this, which is unsettling as you can't get used to it or find anything repeated that you can recognise. The glissando's are used to slide between pitches so lots of the time the note isnt even in tune, which is uncomfortable to listen to, showing that something unsettling will happen. In addition , the synthesiser is an unnatural instrument, referencing that unnatural things happen in the film.
The text content is very simple, with only names. This adds to air of mystery, because you still don't know what its called. The blue colour normally connotes calm and peaceful, however it can also be associated with cold and depressing. For this film, it is used so show cold, as they are in the mountains. the light blue is very vivid, and like the car, which is significant because as a thriller you would expectit to be dark. the colour saturation in the scenery is also very light until you see the overlook hotel, making it seem even more unsettling.
Most of the transititions are straight cuts. this can show that time is passing, as the scenery changes between each one. This shows that their journey is taking them far away from civilisation, making them seem lonely. The straight cut is a fast transition so it is very sudden and unexpected. This slightly unnerves the veiwer, and prepares them for the shocks that will be later in the film. They is a fade between the first 2 scenery cuts. This is more gentle, so does not disorientate the veiwer as much



The canted angle at the beginning of the opening shows disorientation.
