Question 5:
How have you engaged your audience?
Our thriller engages audiences with its characters and themes. The characters ( a family woman, a young family, a teen and a student) are all typical a represent normal everyday poeple, which our audience will relate to, as it is likely they will know someone like the character, for example they may have younger siblings who like the park. Using the 'uses and gratifications' theory the audience may relate the the character directly, called personal identity. This is more specific to the teen and the student, as our target audience will be around 15-21, so are more likely to be in or recently out of education, so when they see a student working extra time they will relate to it, as well as the teenager watching TV, they will relate to enjoying relaxing watching TV. Also the normality of the characters makes them easier to create a personal relationship with, so the audience will form an opinion on them easier.
Also using the uses and gratifications theory, the audience will become hooked on the diversion from reality. This is provided by the supernatural element of our killer. by having an obvious antagonist so early on, the audience will immediately escape everyday life. Also, having a supernatural killer in ordinary places( such as a car and a classroom) is unusual, and so creates a diversion from real life, which will hook our audience in.
Surveillance is the fourth point in the uses and gratifications theory. After the string of four murders in 2 minutes our audience will want to know what happens next, as audiences naturally want to keep track of the characters and follow their storylines. This will be particulalry effective with our antagonist, as the editing ( in particular our use of super imposition to create the illusion of our killer appearing, and the swapping between alive and dead to confuse the audince as we don't explicitly show a murder) in our opening suggests that she can appear at any moment, seemingly out of thin air, and kills her victim in cold blood. The audience will want to find out more about the killer, for example, How does she just appear? Is there any reason behind who she murders? Questions like this will hopefully intrigue our audience and keep them watching.
